A testament to the programs’ efficacies can be found in its success with the Teachers’ Retirement System of the State of Kentucky (TRS). TRS sought an innovative solution to lower healthcare costs while improving the health of their members. Coriell Life Sciences was selected to perform a population risk assessment and found 83 percent of TRS members were on at least one drug known to be affected by genetics. Using deidentified claims data, Coriell Life Sciences was able to give the plan administrators a projection of how much savings the program would generate.

The Medication Safety Program was implemented as a free, voluntary benefit to TRS members. Personalized medication action plans, which outline recommended changes to existing medications and considerations for future medications, were created by specially trained pharmacists utilizing GDL and subsequently shared with members and their physicians.
